Yesterday in one of my groups, one of the members asked if anyone knew anything about importing gemstones because he had a great connection to some mines.
I don't profess to be any expert on gemstones even though some of my wholesale sterling silver jewelry has stones. But the following is what I answered:
Even though I've been importing wholesale jewelry for many years, I've never been involved in the gemstone business. But keep in mind and be aware that some gems may be prohibited from entering the United States. I've always believed that importing is a privilege, not a right and you must follow all importing rules. Get a good customs broker that doesn't mind answering your questions.
Also, do the gemstones have duties? You should know this before you purchase to know what your cost will actually be. You can find some information here: http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/index.htm. It's the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and you will need to know the classification in order to import. It's not the easiest document to read so a customs broker will be able to help you find the proper classification and duties.
So, the moral, always get information before you import. If you have any questions on importing, please post.
