"After watching the news one night and realizing that department stores were starting their after Christmas Sales before Christmas because of sluggish sales, I decided that we would open our website to everyone," says Jo Guerra, owner of JoJewelry. "When we decided to do away with minimums and no longer required customers to sign in to view wholesale prices, we actually started attracting more businesses to our website and larger sales."
Fifteen years ago, Jo packed her suitcase, got in her car and drove from Texas to Mexico to begin her importing career. The company had its beginning in a kiosk at a mall a month later. From there, JoJewelry moved to a wholesale mart and concentrated on selling wholesale sterling silver jewelry to stores. They added costume jewelry to their mix and started hosting fund-raising retail shows for hospitals and non-profit organizations.
"Fundraising jewelry shows were fun and rewarding," says Jo. "We felt that we really contributed to the community by being involved in worthwhile causes. It is something we are planning on getting involved with again, but this time we will be using our website to create virtual fundraising shows."
Jo now travels several times a year to import unique jewelry designs in sterling silver and costume jewelry from India, Thailand and other foreign countries.
