I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't know the first thing about buying jewelry or knowing if it was real. I took a stone and acid test to make sure the jewelry was indeed sterling or .925 (92.5% silver) and hired the guide from the information center to take me to see sterling silver jewelry. He picked me up in his white Volkswagen bug, no air conditioner, none needed really - the weather was crisp and cool. Up and down we traveled through the steep, narrow cobble stone streets.

I just didn’t know if I could sleep with the noise of the traffic and the dogs barking. Since it had no air conditioning, I figured I would have to open the doors to the tiny patio, only big enough for two people to stand, to let air in if it was hot. And there were no screens to keep bugs out.

This is the third in a series about traveling to Mexico under "Stories About My Importing Business"
I stopped by the hotel the tourist guide had suggested. I parked illegally by the old fountain in the roundabout and went up a narrow walkway or that looked like a drive towards the hotel, passed by a phone booth, which would be the phone I’d have to use to call anyone in the United States. The lobby was tiny with only two leather and wood chairs. Red, green, blue, white and yellow flags hung on twine from the ceiling as if they were having a party.

I arrived in Taxco, Guerrero, the silver jewelry capital of Mexico the next day after driving through winding mountain roads at two in the afternoon. I stopped at an old red brick gasoline station with metal framed large glass windows that housed the Tourist Information office which consisted of one desk and one tourist guide wearing a white guayavera shirt and medium blue pants and a very loud voice.

I'd always thought I'd have my own business and when I first started I drove from South Texas, right across the border into the country by MYSELF to guy sterling silver jewelry (you can see some of my jewelry here) and artisan merchandise. I had just flown down from Denver into Laredo and I told me dad the night I arrived I was leaving to Mexico the next day - and not before because I did not want him to worry and I did not want him to stop me. He looked at me, stuttered a little and asked, You're what? His eyes were big and his voice was very stern. I'm leaving to Mexico tomorrow, I repeated.
